After the world’s most expensive diamond heist goes wrong, Jack Overton finds himself running from the man who had once been his master - England’s most powerful magistrate of the eighteenth century, Sir Robert Williams. With deep ties to one of the most violent Secret Societies in Europe, the honorable Sir Robert Williams will stop at nothing to catch him.

There are few places in the western world that would harbor such a fugitive, and he finds himself headed for the one place that no one would bother to look Great Britain’s newest penal colony – New South Wales.

But surviving in the new harsh land is going to be hard for a thief whose only real skill is looking out for his own greedy desires.

Particularly when he meets recently widowed convict Anna Harper, and finds that their lives and destinies are unwittingly entwined.

At times the change in perspective can be a little confusing and there are inconsistencies in regard to time, and the author tends to change from past to present tense. Those things aside, the plot is detailed and full of a certain sense of anticipation--the heroes miss each other by moments, the escapes are close and narrow, and the realistic light of life during the century is a change from the norm where details are ignored or assumed. I came quickly to appreciate Anna's strength, and what it brought out in Jack, whilst harbouring a certain sense of distrust for Matthew as I followed the stories. A question each reader should ask after such a tale is to simply this: what is the price of honor?

The Price of Retribution edition by Christopher Cartwright Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It was great to read a story about the First Fleet of Australia! Overall the story had a bit of everything, some romance, suspense, mystery, action, drama. . . it was great -)
It was enjoyable
Enjoyed reading the book. Ex citing story and plot. Good figures and detAiled description of the location. Good ending to the story.
Interesting story set in early Australia's penal colony. Some parts of the story get a little too far fetched for me, but overall it was OK. Once again I have to complain about the poor proof reading and editing of this e-book. This seems to be the case in most of the ones I have read and it can be fairly distracting at times.
While I enjoyed parts of this book very much, I sometimes felt that I needed a genealogy chart to keep track of who was who. The most interesting part was that which told me about the beginnings of the shipping of "convicts" to the New Netherlands, as Australia was then called, and I was intrigued by the encounter with the indigenous Australians. I would have enjoyed a book centered on penal colony life entirely.
What an adventure! No big secrets hidden throughout this book, so it really built the anticipation of how it would end for everyone. It won't disappoint. Great read. Now I have to catch up on everything I ignored while investing all my time to this book.
The book has a confusing and apparently disjointed begining. However, if the reader pushes through past the fourth chapter he will be rewarded with an attention grabbing tale. The setting is the late 1700's British empire and spans three continents A page turner filled with deceit, revenge, greed and a few other twists along the way.
